What makes Africa so special to tourists and explorers from all corners of the world? Maybe it's the vibrant ecology and the many exotic animals that can be seen on an African safari. Maybe it's the wide open spaces and sweeping savannahs that must be seen to be believed. Maybe it's that wild, untamed feel of the place that dissipates the frantic pace of the urban lifestyle.
There are the shores of the lakes - Victoria, Tanganyika and Nyasa – and the banks of the rivers - Nile, Zambezi, Limpopo and Niger. Plus the beautiful coastline of East Africa and the great pyramids of Egypt - all wonders of the world.
The mountains of Kilimanjaro, the Drakensburgs and the Atlas range, the forests of DR Congo and the deserts of the north as well as the rich mineral resources scattered all over. What about the people?! They are truly magnificent even in the face of extreme poverty or adversity. They smile like no other, they dance to a rhythm we don’t possess, they sing like angels.
Africa is a continent that gets into your bones. Many say that after an experience in Africa you are changed forever.
James 2: 14-26 reminds us that faith without action is dead. In Africa there is much to be done. We are called to care for the orphan and the widow. Sadly Africa has both in abundance. The HIV/AIDS pandemic is centred in Africa. Millions of people every day suffer from the effects of preventable diseases and live on less than a dollar a day.
Yet Africa is a source of joy and harmony, where people gather together to mourn with those who mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice. Come and see for yourself. Experience, they say, is the best teacher.
We love Africa because its people never lose hope that things will get better someday.
