LAMU

Where is Lamu?
Lamu is a small island off the far Northern Coast of Kenya – very close to the border with Somalia.

Why is Lamu a unique holiday destination?

Time Travel- It’s like going back in time! There are no cars, only donkeys to move things & carry people from village to village.

Culture- Lamu is an amazing mix of Middle Eastern/Arabic culture & African culture.

Architecture- The architecture known as Swahili stucco (see photo above) is characterised by whitewash walls, use of stone & coral in the external walls and intricate bookcasing and other decorative features in the walls. Really unique and quite beautiful as well as functionally cool for hot weather.

History– The Old Town of Lamu is a World Heritage Listed site it is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, retaining its traditional functions. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterized by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors. Lamu has hosted major Muslim religious festivals since the 19th century, and has become a significant centre for the study of Islamic and Swahili cultures.
